Distortion Portrait #2

Inspired by Richter’s use of distortion within his art whether it be portraiture or abstract, I decided to paint another distortion portrait. I thought it quite strange how my first distortion portrait was so eerily similar to the effect in Richter’s “photo paintings” and this time attempted to emulate it more closely. There was an old mirror in my garden that had been there for a long time and had become very dirty and grimy and I think it created quite a cool effect for the subject photo which was taken roughly three to four years ago whilst I was sporting a Mohawk type hairstyle. Gerhard Richter

Born in 1932, Gerhard Richter is a German visual artist who although avoids categorizing his art, has produced abstract, conceptual and photorealistic paintings as well as working with glass and photography. He is widely regarded as the greatest living painter in the world and I can easily see why. Since discovering him I’ve found great influence from his art and can easily appreciate everything I have seen of his. Continue reading “Gerhard Richter”

Hannah Höch

A pioneering Collage artist, Hannah Höch was born in 1889 and was considered an important member of the Berlin Dada movement. Jim Dine Tool Study #1

Today I paid homage to an artist named Jim Dine and his portrayal of tools in a variety of media. Dine was born in America in 1935 and is considered one of the founding pop artists of the 1960’s with his art focussing mainly on clothing and domestic objects at the time.  Continue reading “Jim Dine Tool Study #1”

The Weeping Woman

In 1937 France, Pablo Picasso created an oil painting entitled The Weeping Woman. It was influenced in some part by Germany’s bombing of Guernica during the Spanish Civil War also in 1937, which is considered by most to be the first bombing of a defenceless population by an air force. To further understand The Weeping Woman and it’s creation we must also look at the destruction of Guernica and the subsequent creativity this gave Picasso. Continue reading “The Weeping Woman”

Sketchbook Cover Creation

I was tasked with creating a cover for my sketchbook. I needed to include something that I felt represented “visual recording” and perhaps highlighted my own personal style at the same time. Continue reading “Sketchbook Cover Creation”
